Periodontal Care

Periodontal (gum) disease is a common problem that is the result of poor oral hygiene. During your dental checkup, your dentist will do a periodontal exam which includes a mild probing of the space between the gums and the teeth. Healthy gums should have little to no gapping, and should not bleed.

Periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease or periodontitis, is caused by poor oral hygiene, as plaque turns to tartar that begins to irritate the gums, causing them to separate and create pockets between the teeth and gums. These pockets become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

If you are experiencing any symptom or severity of gum disease, we will suggest the proper treatment for you. For less severe complications, such as gingivitis, simple root planing and scaling may be appropriate. During this procedure, we simply clean out the plaque and tartar buildup that occurs between your gums and your tooth’s surface. For more severe cases (periodontitis) where plaque and tartar have accumulated so far as to move your gums away from your tooth surface, we will clean out the surface completely either using laser treatment or pocket elimination surgery.
